President of ReBUILD Metro
Meet ReBUILD Metro: For almost 20 years, ReBUILD Metro has been working with communities in East Baltimore to transform their abandoned houses and vacant lots into new homes, green spaces, and community assets. Working block by block and neighborhood by neighborhood, our community-driven “whole blocks” approach to neighborhood revitalization has created almost 500 new homes and has reduced local vacancy rates by over 90%, transforming neighborhoods into healthy, growing communities of opportunity without displacing anyone. ReBuild Metro’s vision is to foster a network of inclusive and resilient communities where both new and legacy residents can thrive and build wealth, and where nobody has to live next to an abandoned house. ReBuild Metro exemplifies the “whole block” strategy and approach to development that is required to not just rehabilitate a property, but to transform a neighborhood and transform a market. “
Ten years ago, ReBUILD made a commitment to Johnston Square residents that we would work with them to eliminate the vacancy plaguing their neighborhood. While we still have lots of work to do to reach that goal, our tremendous progress shows that it is well within reach. This change was only possible because we have worked hand-in-hand with the community every step of the way, and because people across Baltimore believed it was possible.” – Sean Closkey
